What Is Zantac?
Zantac is a brand name for ranitidine, a drug that can reduce the production of stomach acid. Because of this effect, it is often used as an over-the-counter treatment for heartburn, acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
Zantac is produced by pharmaceutical companies Boerhinger Ingelheim and Sanofi.
Why Is Zantac Being Recalled?
On Sept. 13, 2019, the FDA alerted the public that it had detected a cancer-causing substance in unsafe concentrations within ranitidine drugs, which included Zantac and other generic drugs created by GlaxoSmithKline, Sandoz and Apotex. The carcinogenic substance was identified as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which is an organic compound known to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
