Mental Health Resources

Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you, doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone.” – Lisa Olivera

Feeling overwhelmed? Talking to someone who is trained, trauma-informed, and can provide confidentiality is important. Most friends and family members do not have the training and even the best intentions can have unintended consequences.

Here are some resources that can provide support or connect you to a service provider.

DIRECTORIES TO SEARCH FOR THERAPISTS & PSYCHOLOGISTS

These directories are a great place to start the search for a therapist or psychologist because they have many search filters that help find exactly what you need. You can filter by location, insurance accepted, sliding fee scale (fee based on your income), specialties, gender, years of experience, languages, type of therapy, etc. If the service provider’s website is listed, check it out to get a better idea of their focus or true specialty and maybe a glimpse at their personality or communication style. Therapy is very personal; unfortunately, it may take a couple to find the right fit or feel comfortable.

FREE SUPPORT AND COUNSELING FOR SURVIVORS

Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Crisis Centers

Hotlines are available 24/7/365. SA/DV crisis centers provide free confidential counseling, advocacy, and sometimes limited legal services for survivors. Counseling is often limited to 8-12 sessions. If there is a waitlist, you can sign up while continuing to look elsewhere. Major urban areas typically have their own crisis centers. Not all rural communities will have a crisis center. Search the internet for the name of the city and “rape crisis center” or “domestic violence center”.
